About the museum
The Muzeum Geologiczne was founded on 1 March 2000 at the University of Łódź and grew largely out of the collecting work of Dr Jan Ziomek, who headed it until 30 September 2012. It was named after Jan Ziomek on 12 May 2015, and some of the first exhibits came from the Muzeum Ziemi (Museum of the Earth), which operated from May 1999 to February 2000. The collections grew through donations, purchases and research carried out at the university.
The museum is housed in a building at ul. Kopcińskiego, next to the Collegium Geographicum, and belongs to the Faculty of Geographical Sciences. The exhibitions occupy two floors with a total area of 660 m². About 4000 exhibits are on show, and a further 2000 or so are kept in storage. The display includes minerals arranged systematically, specimens from well-known sites in Europe, agates, meteorites, tektites, synthetic crystals, decorative rocks used in architecture, erratic boulders and Palaeozoic fossils.
The permanent exhibitions are called “The World of Minerals” (Świat minerałów), “Stone for Building and Decoration in Architecture” (Kamień budowlany i ozdobny w architekturze), “Nature of Łódź and the Łódź Region” (Przyroda Łodzi i Regionu Łódzkiego) and “Crystals in Nature and Technology” (Kryształy w przyrodzie i technice). The most frequent visitors are school groups, for whom the museum runs themed lectures.
