About the museum
The Roma Forge (Kuźnia Romów) is one of the surviving buildings of the former Gypsy camp, set up in late autumn 1941 on a separate part of the Łódź ghetto. In November 1941 around 5,000 Roma and Sinti deported from Burgenland were brought to the camp. The prisoners, most of them children, suffered from hunger, overcrowding and terrible sanitary conditions, and a typhus epidemic broke out in the camp. In January 1942 the surviving prisoners were taken to the German Nazi extermination camp at Chełmno nad Nerem (Kulmhof) and murdered there.
The former forge building, probably the site where prisoners were executed, was adapted for exhibition purposes in 2009 and has for more than a decade served as a place of remembrance. It is a branch of the Museum of Independence Traditions in Łódź (Muzeum Tradycji Niepodległościowych).
On the 80th anniversary of the first deportation, the museum prepared a new permanent exhibition here devoted to the Holocaust of the Roma and the history of the camp. It was created in cooperation with archives, museums and Roma organisations from Poland and Austria.
