About the museum

The Muzeum Geologii Złóż Politechniki Śląskiej (Museum of Deposit Geology of the Silesian University of Technology) in Gliwice is named after Czesław Poborski, its founder and first head. Its collections were built from materials gathered after the Second World War, and the first exhibition opened in 1961. The museum regards itself as the successor of the Silesian natural history museums that were already developing in the first half of the 19th century.

The oldest part of the collection consists of rocks, minerals and ores gathered by Father Leopold Jan Szersznik, first shown in Cieszyn in 1802. Many specimens come from the municipal museums of Upper Silesia and Cieszyn Silesia; others were collected by the university’s staff, graduates and students.

The museum is housed in the building of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation and serves geology teaching and the popularisation of Earth sciences among pupils and residents. The collections comprise more than 25,000 specimens, and around 4,000–5,000 people visit the museum each year.
