About the museum

The first sewage treatment works in Gliwice was put into use in 1911, and according to the surviving chronicles it used innovative solutions. Part of this complex was the pumping station, built in the same period, which remained in operation for the following decades; even at the end of the 1990s it still served as one of the objects of the old sewage pumping station.

When construction of the new Centralna Oczyszczalnia Ścieków (Central Sewage Treatment Works) began in 2000, the historic building was taken out of use and converted into a museum. The building, more than a hundred years old and with features of early twentieth-century architecture, with a rich roof truss and original turrets, resembles a small manor house. In two surviving halls with decorative vaults, former equipment is displayed: pumps, sluice gates, compressors, wooden pipes and a wooden washing machine. Visitors are also welcomed by old tiling from the end of the nineteenth century and original interior details.

The museum belongs to the Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji (Water and Sewerage Company) in Gliwice and is the youngest museum in the town. It forms part of the Szlak Zabytków Techniki (Trail of Technical Monuments) of the Silesian Voivodeship, which is linked to the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Until now the visit ended with a visit to the modern laboratory of the treatment works.
