About the museum
Szyb Maciej is part of the historic complex of the former Concordia hard coal mine in Zabrze. The mine was established in the centre of today's city and belonged to the Henckel von Donnersmarck family; coal extraction began in 1841, and from 1848 it was managed by Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck. In 1801, forty years earlier, the nearby Amalia mine, the first private mine in Zabrze, had been opened; in 1876 it was incorporated into Concordia.
Today the historic buildings from the early 20th century form a complex that belongs to the Silesian Voivodeship Route of Technical Monuments (Szlak Zabytków Techniki Województwa Śląskiego). The owner of the site is the mining company DEMEX Sp. z o.o. The complex houses a restaurant and a bistro, and the former halls host receptions and events.
Visits take place only with a guide and lead through the historic buildings and up the winding tower to the viewing terrace. The route lasts 60–70 minutes and requires walking up steep metal stairs. The buildings also contain an exhibition hall, the engine room and the former switchgear room.
