About the museum
The Gliwice Royal Iron Foundry, started in 1796 with a coke-fired blast furnace, was one of the most modern plants in Europe at the end of the 18th century. Among other things, the first Iron Cross, the highest decoration awarded by the Prussian king Frederick William III for courage on the battlefield, was made there.
In 1991 the foundry passed into the ownership of the Gliwice museum, which set up an exhibition of artistic castings here. Until 18 January 2010 the exhibition was located in a 19th-century production hall on the grounds of the Gliwice Technical Equipment Plants. The current exhibition at ul. Bojkowska in Nowe Gliwice was opened on 1 October 2010.
The branch is housed in the former engine room of the no longer existing ‘Gliwice’ mine. The main part of the exhibition, designed by Mirosław Nizio, consists of four cubic display cases resembling smelting furnaces in shape, with exhibits and multimedia presentations on the history of artistic casting in Gliwice and on the history of metallurgy and industry in Silesia. The branch lies on the Route of Technical Monuments of the Silesian Voivodeship and the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
