About the museum

The Muzeum Historii Medycyny (Museum of the History of Medicine) was established in 2011 by resolution of the Senate of the Medical University of Warsaw, on the initiative of the rector, Prof. Marek Krawczyk, on the basis of a statute approved by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The first director was Prof. Edward Towpik. It is the first and only institution of its kind in the capital, open to all residents of Warsaw.

The museum is housed in the building of the Centrum Biblioteczno-Informacyjne (Library and Information Centre) on the university campus at ul. Żwirki i Wigury. It collects manuscripts, early printed books, medical instruments, archive documents, iconography, recordings and films, coming from donations, purchases and deposits. On the first floor there is a Galeria Wystaw Czasowych (Gallery of Temporary Exhibitions) devoted to the history of medicine and to other fields of culture and art, and on the ground floor is the permanent exhibition.

The museum runs museum lessons for young people and students, regular lectures and a programme for the Museums Night, as well as the project “Teatr Anatomiczny XXI wieku” (Anatomical Theatre of the 21st Century), using 3D mapping.
