About the museum
The Muzeum Wodociągów i Kanalizacji (Museum of Waterworks and Sewerage) is located on the grounds of the William Lindley Filter Station complex at ul. Koszykowa, in technical building no. 2. The station, built in 1883–1886 on the initiative of the President of Warsaw, Sokrates Starynkiewicz, to designs by the English engineer William Lindley, has supplied residents with drinking water since 3 July 1886. It is still an active water treatment plant and a protected site.
The grounds preserve, among others, a water tower from 1885–1886, the oldest slow sand filters from 1886, and the Zakład Filtrów Pospiesznych (Rapid Filter Plant), built in 1929–1933. The museum displays, among other things, a fragment of Warsaw’s wooden water main from the 17th century, old pumps and valves, plans of the sewerage network, and a historic diving suit with a brass helmet.
The museum is open on open days, during the Museums Night, and to groups by prior arrangement. The tour of the plant also includes the water tower, the slow filters and the rapid filter hall.
