About the museum

The Skierniewice Historical Museum was officially opened on 6 October 2018. In 2019 it was merged with the Skierniewice History Room (Izba Historii Skierniewic), which had opened on 19 February 1987 on the initiative of the Society of Friends of Skierniewice in the Dworek Konstancji Gładkowskiej manor house. On 7 February 2022 the museum was given the name of Jan Olszewski.

The museum is housed in a historic building erected in 1890 to a design by Aleksander J. Woyde, which belonged to the former barracks complex of the Russian army between ul. Stefana Batorego and ul. 26 Dywizji Piechoty. The complex served in turn the tsarist army, the Polish army, the occupying forces and the Polish People's Army (Ludowe Wojsko Polskie), and the building was formerly an infirmary. The single-storey building, shaped like the letter T, has 714 m² of usable floor space and is divided into an entrance and information zone, an exhibition and education zone, and an office and storage zone.

The strength of the permanent exhibition is its interdisciplinarity: the history of the city is complemented by themes from archaeology, nature, biography, science, technology, music, art, crafts and militaria. The museum runs a library and archive with literature on the history of the city and the interwar local press, a museum shop with souvenirs and publications, and the digital Archive of Skierniewice. It organises exhibition openings, lectures, concerts, performances and picnics in the building and in the garden. The museum's branch is the Dworek Konstancji Gładkowskiej at ul. Św. Floriana 4.
