About the museum
The museum’s beginnings go back to 1982, when during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Amateur Regional Ensemble named after Wł. St. Reymont a Regional Room (Izba Regionalna) was opened in Lipce. It was set up on the initiative of local lovers of tradition and of the Muzeum Okręgowe in Żyrardów. On 20 June 1983 the room was transformed into the Museum named after Wł. St. Reymont, initially a branch of the Żyrardów museum, and later an independent institution. Since 2003 it has been a cultural institution of Skierniewice County.
Since 1989 the museum has been housed in the buildings of the former textile manufactory of the Winkiel family. The works were founded at the end of the 19th century by Ludwik Winkiel, who settled in Lipce in 1889. Carding, spinning and dyeing of wool were carried out there, as well as weaving fabrics for Łowicz striped cloth (pasiaki łowickie) and the production of sweaters, socks and gloves. Full production ran until 1950, and dyeing until 1974. The buildings have survived together with machinery for the full technological cycle from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Most of the collection is shown in the exhibition “Tradycje lipieckie” (Lipce Traditions), made up of a historical and an ethnographic part. Visitors see old costumes, fabrics, embroidery, the furnishings of a Lipce cottage and farm tools, as well as memorabilia connected with Władysław Stanisław Reymont. Next to the museum is the Zagroda Ludowa (Folk Farmstead) with relocated buildings of former rural architecture.
