About the museum

The museum began operating on 23 June 2013, the day the Upper Church of the St John Paul II Sanctuary at Białe Morza in Kraków was consecrated. Until 29 February 2020 it was called the Archdiocesan Museum of St John Paul II and was a branch of the Archdiocesan Museum of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. From 1 March 2020 it has been directly managed, together with its collections, by the St John Paul II Centre “Nie lękajcie się!” (“Be not afraid!”).

The institution is distinguished by a rich collection of mementos and objects connected with the Pope, including items of personal use and gifts presented to John Paul II during his 27-year pontificate, on apostolic journeys and at meetings with guests. The Pope handed over these collections gradually, mainly at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, and after his death a large part of the collection came to the museum through Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, the initiator of the construction of the Centre.

The museum is located on the ground floor of the Veritas building, next to the main entrance to the Upper Church. Visitors can see the permanent exhibitions “Nasz Papież” (“Our Pope”) on the spiritual and moral legacy of John Paul II, the only exhibition in Poland “Kim jest człowiek z Całunu” (“Who is the Man of the Shroud”), and “Karol Wojtyła w Trentino”. The offer also includes a VR cinema with the series “The Way”.
