About the museum

The Centrum Edukacji Przyrodniczej UJ (Nature Education Centre of the Jagiellonian University) was established on 1 October 2016 by resolution of the Senate as a non-faculty unit. It brings together the natural history collections formerly kept in the university's Zoological Museum, Geological Museum, Palaeobotanical Museum and Anthropological Museum. Their origins go back to 1782, when the Cabinet of Natural History (Gabinet Historii Naturalnej) was set up on the initiative of Hugo Kołłątaj.

The building on the Third Campus of the UJ at ul. Gronostajowa 5 has about 4700 m² of floor space, of which about 2500 m² is taken up by the exhibition section. Construction began in 2012, and the building was taken into use two years later; the setting up of the exhibitions lasted until the second half of 2015, and the transfer of the collections was completed in 2017.

The main exhibition is the permanent exhibition “Evolution of the Earth and Life” (Ewolucja Ziemi i życia), covering, among other things, animal systematics, biogeography, ethology, anthropology, mineralogy, palaeontology and geological processes. The permanent part also includes an astronomy section, a reconstruction of a 19th-century natural history cabinet and an insectarium. Temporary exhibitions are shown in separate rooms.
