About the museum
The roots of the museum go back to the interwar period, when the regional movement in the Lublin region was strong, often led by teachers. After the Second World War the Hrubieszów Regional Society named after Stanisław Staszic founded the institution, which had been showing its collections since the early 1960s. The museum was officially opened on 6 November 1965 during the Staszic Days celebrations, and in 1966 it was taken over by the state.
In 1976 the institution became a branch of the Zamość District Museum and received the name of Fr Stanisław Staszic. Since October 1999 it has been a county cultural institution. It was initially housed in one room of the Scouts' House (Dom Harcerza), and in December 1970 it received the historic du Chateau manor house at ul. 3 Maja 11. The collections were moved there in 1972, after renovation work carried out in 1977–1984, and the permanent exhibitions opened there on 6 December 1984.
The manor house was built on the site of a castle destroyed in 1648. It is a single-storey brick building with a two-storey central section, a portico with four columns and the date 1791 above the entrance. The museum occupies the main building and the east wing. The collections include archaeological, ethnographic, historical, numismatic and art objects, as well as materials on Stanisław Staszic and the Hrubieszów Agricultural Society (Towarzystwo Rolnicze Hrubieszowskie).
