About the museum

The museum was founded in 1969 on the initiative of the Towarzystwo Miłośników Skarżyska-Kamiennej as the Społeczne Muzeum Miejskie in the Rejów district. In the 1980s the institution bore the name of Gen. Zygmunt Berling; since 1991 it has been called Muzeum im. Orła Białego, in memory of the heroism of the members of the underground organisation “Orzeł Biały” during the Second World War.

The museum is housed in a historic 19th-century building that served as the administrative annex of the Huta “Rejów” ironworks, which was linked to the Staropolski Okręg Przemysłowy. The blast furnace works with a finery forge and a system of sluices was built in the 18th century, and its remains can still be seen today.

The museum’s mission is to preserve the heritage connected with the history of the army and military affairs and to bring the history of the region closer to people. The exhibition “Skarżysko-Kamienna. Miasto i ludzie” tells the story of the town from earliest times to the political transformation, while “Barwa i broń XX wieku” shows weapons and uniforms from both World Wars and the Cold War. In the square in front of the museum stand outdoor exhibits, including a German Panzerkampfwagen IV tank.
