About the museum
The history of the museum begins in 1993, when Urszula Wolska found parts of her grandmother’s weaving workshop in the attic of the family home in Majków near Skarżysko: shuttles, bobbin winders and reeds, as well as her grandfather’s sawing trestle (kobylica). Years later she managed to find similar looms in Suchedniów. The weaving and wheelwright’s tools formed the beginning of a collection devoted to the old village, which is still being added to today.
The collection was shown at exhibitions in various venues, including the technology festival in Maleniec and the open-air museum in Tokarnia. Old tools, everyday objects and textiles were used in work with children, young people and adults. As the exhibits grew in number, a permanent exhibition was set up in the former farm outbuildings, and weaving workshops, demonstrations and regular events were organised, such as Dzień Tkaczki (Weaver’s Day) on the first Saturday of October.
The Museum of the Old Village “Domek Tkaczki” (The Weaver’s Cottage) was formally founded in 2012, when the Minister of Culture and National Heritage signed its statute on 25 June. The permanent exhibition is devoted to weaving and fibre processing, and the collections also include tools and household objects of the old village. In 2026 digitisation of the exhibits began, and photographs have been made available on Wikimedia Commons. Since 2022 the museum has not run activities for groups.
