About the museum
Joseph Wittig, a German theologian, philosopher and writer, was born in 1879 in Słupiec-Dolina near Nowa Ruda. He returned to his native region in 1927, after years of study and work, and on 19 June 1926 he laid the foundation stone of the house he designed himself. He described the Kłodzko Land as the land of the Lord God, wrote the chronicles of Nowa Ruda and Słupiec, and in 1937 became an honorary citizen of the town. He lived in the house with his family until 1946.
The museum was opened in this house on 8 May 1997, on the initiative of the Fundacja Odnowy Ziemi Noworudzkiej (Foundation for the Renewal of the Nowa Ruda Land), as a tribute to a distinguished figure. The ceremony was attended by Cardinal Henryk Gulbinowicz and Wittig’s family.
There are two rooms on the ground floor. One shows a biographical exhibition; in the other, based on archive photographs, the writer’s former study has been reconstructed, which conveys the atmosphere of his work and rest. Some of the furnishings come from the original house. Visitors will also see souvenirs and part of the book collection donated by the family from Germany, as well as documents from the Archiwum Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego (Archive of the University of Wrocław).
