About the museum
The Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek presents the figure of the Marshal against a broad historical, cultural and social background, and recalls the ideas of the struggle for independence and of building the state with which he was associated. The institution collects memorabilia linked to Piłsudski and the era in which he lived; its holdings cover the period from the January Uprising to the end of his life, as well as testimonies of remembrance of him up to the present day.
The museum complex lies in a wooded park of about 4 ha. It consists of three historic buildings and one new one. The heart of the ensemble is the “Milusin” manor house, where the Piłsudski family settled in 1923. The house was designed by the architect Kazimierz Skórewicz in a style referring to Polish manor houses; after leaving state office the Marshal found rest there. The surrounding historic garden, with a kitchen garden, orchard and apiary, recalls a former summer retreat. The complex also includes Willa Bzów from the 1920s, which after 1932 was taken over by the foundation of officers’ holiday homes and after the war housed a health clinic.
In the new building, in an underground hall of 2,100 m², the permanent exhibition “Dla Rzeczypospolitej. Józef Piłsudski 1867–1935” (“For the Republic. Józef Piłsudski 1867–1935”) is shown. It has six galleries: five chronological ones (Ziuk, Wiktor, Komendant, Naczelnik, Marszałek) and the gallery “Symbol”, devoted to Piłsudski’s legacy. The exhibition has won, among other awards, the Sybilla prize and commendations in design competitions.
