About the museum
The Warszawskie Muzeum Chleba (Warsaw Bread Museum) was founded in 2000 on the initiative of Marian Pozorek, a baker since 1959 and member of the Stołeczny Cech Piekarzy (Warsaw Bakers’ Guild). He had been gathering the collection since the 1980s, visiting fairs and markets across Poland. The museum is in the Szmulowizna estate in Warsaw’s Praga-Północ district, at ul. Jadowska 2, in three rooms next to the bakery founded by Pozorek. After his death in December 2015 his descendants continue to run the bakery and the museum as the Manufaktura Wypieków Pozorek (Pozorek Baking Manufacture).
The exhibition is one of the smallest in the capital, but it shows a long history of the craft: a grain mill from 1890, a flour sifter from 1902, a manual bread-roll divider, a croissant machine from 1916, Kaiser rolls from various years, slicers, moulds for bread, gingerbread and wafers, baker’s shovels, scales, and master’s and journeyman’s diplomas.
The museum welcomes school and kindergarten groups. In the workshop “Od ziarna do bochenka” (From Grain to Loaf), children bake rolls themselves under the eye of a baker and can then buy them for a symbolic złoty.
