About the museum

The Muzeum 2 Korpusu Polskiego in Józefów near Warsaw was founded by Mariusz Niewiedzielski. The institution was established in 2011 on the basis of a statute agreed with the Minister of Culture. For more than fifteen years it has gathered collections relating to the fate of Polish soldiers during the Second World War. The story told begins with the deportation to Siberia, continues through the formation of the Polish Army in the USSR and the evacuation to the Middle East, the battle of Monte Cassino, the liberation of Ancona and Bologna, and reaches the postwar fate of the soldiers and their families.

The museum's mission is education and the dissemination of knowledge about the heroism of Polish soldiers and the cultivation of historical memory. The collections include historical, military, technical, biographical and archaeological exhibits, as well as relics connected with the history of Józefów and its surroundings. The permanent exhibition “2 Korpus Polski” is supplemented by a library with publications on the Polish Army in the East and an open-air display of historic vehicles.

The museum lies among pine forest, on the edge of the Mazowiecki Landscape Park. It runs Living History Lessons, during which staff in period uniforms tell about the past, and participants can touch the exhibits and ride a historic vehicle to the nearby Monument to Allied Airmen. There is also a model-making club for children and a reenactment group.
