About the museum

The Muzeum Kampanii Wrześniowej i Twierdzy Modlin (Museum of the September Campaign and Modlin Fortress) is located in Modlin Twierdza in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, in a building that also houses a tourist information point. The museum presents the history of the 1939 September Campaign and of the fortress on the Narew and Vistula rivers.

The Modlin Fortress was created on the decision of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 to build fortifications at the mouth of the Narew into the Vistula. In the Russian period it was extended with barracks and a ring of forts, and in 1918 the Polish Army took it over. In September 1939 heavy Polish-German fighting took place in the area.

The museum’s collection includes memorabilia of the defenders of Modlin, among them the uniform of Marian Markiewicz, a pre-war Polish football international, and a handwritten note by a soldier who fell near Zakroczym. The museum is often recommended as a starting point for visiting sites connected with the Second World War within the fortress.
