About the museum
The museum opened on 25 July 2003 on the initiative of Stanisław Mierzwiński, the last member of the Hajnówka blacksmith family. It grew out of the family forge founded in 1927 and is a private institution.
The collection contains about 586 objects: blacksmith's tools, horseshoes for different seasons, special horseshoes for muddy ground, agricultural machines and models of furnaces. Some of the exhibits come from deposits of other museums. In the courtyard stands a miniature model of an old bloomery furnace (piec dymarski).
Demonstrations of forging take place in the working forge, and visitors can try to strike the hot iron with a hammer themselves. The museum also runs history lessons and workshops for pupils.
