About the museum
The open-air museum began with a post mill (wiatrak-koźlak) from 1925, moved to Białowieża in 1978 from the village of Kotły near Bielsk Podlaski. In 1983 a group of Białystok students, co-owners of the mill, bought more than four hectares of land on the site of the former village of Kropiwnik, destroyed during the Second World War. The initiator and director of the work was Prof. Anatol Odzijewicz.
Over time further buildings were brought to the site from neighbouring villages: a cottage from the village of Biała from 1897, thatched with straw; a second windmill; a workshop (majsternia) with a collection of hand planes; a barn; a bathhouse (bania); and a chapel dedicated to St Alexander Nevsky. The farmsteads have the Bielsk-Hajnówka layout, and inscriptions in Old Church Slavonic survive on the beams of the cottages’ rooms.
The open-air museum is a private initiative, created with the owners’ own funds and the work of volunteers. It was opened to tourists in 2004, and because of its character it is mainly open in the summer holidays and during long weekends.
