About the museum

The Muzeum Martyrologii (Museum of Martyrdom) in Bielsk Podlaski was established in 1969 on the initiative of the town authorities and the management of the then Technical School of Agricultural Accounting, with the support of the Związek Bojowników o Wolność i Demokrację (Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy) and the voivodeship committee for the protection of monuments of struggle and martyrdom. The room décor and the exhibits were prepared and supplied by the Military Museum in Białystok.

The institution is housed in the building of the Zespół Szkół nr 4 im. Ziemi Podlaskiej (School Complex named after the Podlasie Land), in rooms where the local Gestapo headquarters and an investigation prison were located between 1941 and 1944.

The exhibition occupies three rooms: the main cell, a solitary cell and a corridor. They show the organisation of the German apparatus of terror in these lands and commemorate the prisoners, members of the resistance; among the items are instruments of torture and a Polish flag made by the prisoners. The solitary cell has been recreated and furnished with typical equipment.
