About the museum
The Muzeum Małej Ojczyzny (Museum of the Small Homeland) in Studziwody was founded in 1986 by Doroteusz Fionik around an inherited wooden house. It has been open to visitors since 1993, and since 2000 it has been run by an association set up for that purpose. Studziwody, formerly a village, is today a district of Bielsk Podlaski.
The permanent exhibition consists of the interiors of the wooden cottage of the Kondratiuk family from 1925, furnished with objects from the interwar period, including pottery, cooperage and weaving, as well as icons. The site also includes the townhouse of the Antychowicz family from 1823, moved in 2003 from the centre of Bielsk Podlaski, and a granary from 1935. The townhouse displays objects found during archaeological excavations on the site from which it was moved.
The museum presents the culture of the Orthodox Belarusian population of Podlasie and Polesie and of other minorities. It organises craft workshops, meetings, temporary exhibitions and the folk music festival “Tam po majowoj rosi”, publishes books and, since 1998, has issued the regional quarterly “Bielski Hostineć”. The folklore ensemble “Żemerwa” is associated with the museum.
