About the museum
The museum was founded in Lwów at the beginning of the 19th century. Its origin was an agreement of 25 December 1823 between Count Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński and Prince Henryk Lubomirski, an art lover. The collections of the two patrons were combined so that, alongside the Ossolineum’s literary holdings, historical souvenirs and works of art could be gathered. In the early 1870s the museum was opened to the public.
After the outbreak of the Second World War the institution lost part of its collections, including a set of 26 drawings by Albrecht Dürer, taken to Berlin in 1941. After 1945 the collections were scattered, and a considerable part remained in Lwów’s museums. A few objects reached Wrocław, but the museum was not revived in the reconstructed Ossolineum National Institute (Zakład Narodowy im. Ossolińskich). Since 2016 the museum has consisted of an Art Department, a Numismatic Department and an Inventory Department.
The Art Department’s collection includes drawings by European masters from the 15th to the 19th century, including the largest collection of drawings by Rembrandt in the country, Polish and foreign prints from the 16th century onwards, paintings, miniatures and applied art. The coin collections are among the most numerous in Poland. The museum currently has no permanent exhibition of its own: its collections are shown periodically in the main building of the Ossolineum, and a separate museum building is under construction at ul. Szewska.
