About the museum
The Muzeum Pana Tadeusza is a branch of the Ossolineum (Zakład Narodowy im. Ossolińskich) and is housed in the Baroque Kamienica pod Złotym Słońcem (House under the Golden Sun) on the market square in Wrocław. Its history begins on 5 November 1999, when the Tarnowski family, together with the city of Wrocław, donated to the Ossolineum the manuscript of “Pan Tadeusz” by Adam Mickiewicz.
The manuscript has been connected with the Ossolineum since September 1939, when the Tarnowskis deposited it in Lwów. After the war the collections first went to the National Library in Warsaw, and in 1947 to the Ossolineum, re-established in Wrocław. The manuscript is the most valuable exhibit of the Ossolineum and one of the most important monuments of Polish culture.
The permanent exhibition devoted to the manuscript of “Pan Tadeusz” occupies ten rooms on two floors of the house and tells the story of the poem's creation, its world and its reception against the background of Romanticism. The exhibition “Mission: Poland” (Misja: Polska) presents the fates of the generation of Jan Nowak-Jeziorański and Władysław Bartoszewski, and the exhibition on Tadeusz Różewicz, opened on 9 October 2021, shows materials from his archive donated to the Ossolineum.
