About the museum

The Museum of Burgher Art (Muzeum Sztuki Mieszczańskiej) is housed in the Old Town Hall, one of the most important monuments of Wrocław and an outstanding example of late-Gothic secular architecture in Europe. The oldest part of the building, the consistorium, was built by 1299, and further wings were added in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1558–1559 the tower received a Renaissance helm, which stands to this day.

The town hall was damaged during the fighting for Festung Breslau, but it was rebuilt and renovated in 1949–1953. Today the historic interiors include, among others, the Great Hall with a net vault, the Princes’ Hall (Sala Książęca), the Chamber of the Council’s Senior (Izba Seniora Rady), the Council Hall (Sala Rady) and the Council Chancellery (Kancelaria Rady). In the oldest part, the Burghers’ Hall (Sala Mieszczańska), marble busts of outstanding personalities associated with Wrocław stand.

The museum collects and presents objects connected with Wrocław’s craft workshops and with artists from earliest times to the present day. It is one of the branches of the Wrocław City Museum (Muzeum Miejskie Wrocławia).
