About the museum
The Muzeum Farmacji is a research and educational institution of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Medical University named after the Silesian Piasts (Uniwersytet Medyczny im. Piastów Śląskich) in Wrocław. It is housed in a tenement house at ul. Kurzy Targ 4, the only preserved building in Poland in the Renaissance-classicist style, in which a pharmacy operated without interruption from the second half of the 13th century to the early 1950s. The first mentions of it come from the town's tax books of 1286.
The idea of founding a museum appeared in the 1960s, and between 1982 and 1991 renovations of the tenement house were carried out with funds from the Ministry of Culture and Art. In 1991 the Academy of Medicine became the owner of the building. Thanks to EU co-financing from the Regional Operational Programme of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship (the project “House of the Silesian Apothecary”, Dom Śląskiego Aptekarza), the revitalisation was completed and the exhibition rooms were prepared.
The exhibition leads from the alchemist's workshop in the cellar, through the interior of the Renaissance pharmacy on the ground floor and an exhibition on natural remedies and old tools for making medicines, to analytical apparatus and synthetic drugs on the second floor. On the third floor there is an Arabic room (sala arabska) devoted to Muslim and African cultures.
