About the museum
The Museum of the University of Wrocław was established on 6 August 1992 by turning the Museum Collections Department of the University of Wrocław Archive into an independent university-wide unit. In 2005 its branch ‘Dom Archeologa’ (House of the Archaeologist) was set up on the campus at ul. Koszarowa, where temporary exhibitions linked to archaeological research are shown. The collections are devoted mainly to the history of the university from the 15th century to today; the oldest items recall the Leopoldine Academy, but most date from after 1811.
The museum is housed in the university’s main building on the Oder, a Baroque building designed by Christoph Tausch. The university was founded in 1702 at the initiative of the Jesuits and Emperor Leopold I, and construction of the building began in 1728. Today the building is counted among the most valuable Baroque monuments in Poland and in Central and Eastern Europe.
The museum comprises historic interiors: the Leopoldine Hall with illusionistic wall paintings and sculptural furnishings, the Oratorium Marianum from 1728–1741, and the Mathematical Tower with a viewing terrace at a height of 42 m and a meridian line laid into the floor of the former observatory from 1791. These are complemented by three exhibition rooms, two of which house a permanent exhibition on science and teaching at the university.
