About the museum

The Muzeum Oświaty Ziemi Łódzkiej was established in 1983 as a department of the special collections of the Pedagogical Provincial Library in Łódź (Pedagogiczna Biblioteka Wojewódzka w Łodzi). The idea of such an institution had already appeared in 1910, but the Tsarist authorities did not agree to its opening. The museum changed premises several times and has been at ul. Wólczańska 202 since 2009. It is the oldest education museum in Poland operating without interruption.

The collections number more than 7000 items concerning education in the Łódź region and in Poland: from instructions for parish and village schools of 1811 to clandestine teaching during the war and contemporary materials. They include almost 150 school banners, the oldest of which dates from 1916, as well as school archives, chronicles, certificates, school identity cards (legitymacje), photographs, school aprons and school badges.

The exhibition room is set up like a former classroom, with original cast-iron and wooden benches, inkwells and teaching aids from past years. On show are, among other things, old astronomical globes, a telescope, a model of a steam engine and a Bell telephone; many of the devices can be touched and tried out. The museum runs workshops for children and young people, for example in calligraphy, the history of writing and the history of the school satchel, and has taken part in Museum Night since 2010.
