About the museum
The Muzeum Papieru i Druku w Łodzi (Paper and Printing Museum in Łódź) was founded in 2000 and opened to visitors in 2004 in a building at Łódź Widzew railway station. In 2007–2012 it was located at the Instytut Papiernictwa i Poligrafii Politechniki Łódzkiej (Institute of Paper and Printing of the Łódź University of Technology) at ul. Wólczańska, and from 2013 the collections were presented in the Dom Papiernika (Papermaker’s House) at the Skansen Łódzkiej Architektury Drewnianej (Open-Air Museum of Łódź Wooden Architecture). In 2005 the Fundacja Ocalić od Zapomnienia (Save from Oblivion Foundation) was established; it runs the museum.
After the premises at the skansen were closed in 2018, the museum has been housed since July 2024 in a former factory building in the Ogrody Geyera complex at ul. Piotrkowska 301. Workshops were set up there: bookbinding, typography and papermaking, as well as a gallery and a library.
The collections cover the history of papermaking, printing and bookbinding: paper guillotines and cutting machines, a vat for making handmade paper, metal and wooden type with a compositor’s case, a collection of book bindings and bookplates (ekslibrisy), and woodcuts by Zygfryd Gardzielewski. The production cycle of a book is also shown. The museum runs workshops for children and young people, in which participants make paper by hand, among other things.
