About the museum
The Central Fire Service Museum opened in Mysłowice on 14 September 1975; its first director was Major Henryk Chruzik. At first the institution was housed in buildings on ul. Powstańców, and in 1979 construction began on a new home on ul. Stadionowa. In 1982 a department on the history of the city of Mysłowice was added. Since 1992 the museum has belonged to the structures of the State Fire Service (Państwowa Straż Pożarna).
As the collections grew, further exhibition halls (nos. 4 and 5) were opened in 2005, on the museum’s 30th anniversary. In 1995 the Wielkopolskie Muzeum Pożarnictwa w Rakoniewicach became a branch of the museum. Since 2006 the museum has been on the Szlak Zabytków Techniki Województwa Śląskiego (Silesian Voivodeship Route of Technical Monuments). The institution also publishes the “Muzealny Rocznik Pożarniczy”.
The collection holds more than 4 thousand exhibits: banners, uniforms, helmets, motor pumps, hand and horse-drawn fire pumps, and historic and modern fire engines. Among the acquisitions are restored vehicles, including the Benz-Gaggenau motor ambulance from 1913, one of the oldest surviving fire vehicles in Poland. In 2020 and 2021 new permanent exhibitions were opened, devoted to the firefighters’ St Florian’s Day celebration and to the non-firefighting activities of the fire services.
