About the museum
The origins of the museum go back to 1967, when a PTTK branch set up a “corner” devoted to Władysław Reymont in the palace at Małków. A year later, thanks to the collecting of souvenirs by Dr Eugenia Kaleniewicz and local residents, the corner was turned into a Regional Room (Izba Regionalna), which was moved to Warta in 1979. The official opening of the museum, together with the adoption of its statute and name, took place on 24 May 1981. The institution operates at the Warta branch of the PTTK, and its initiator was Dr Eugenia Kaleniewicz, co-founder of the local branch.
The museum is housed in a 19th-century townhouse, which once contained a coaching inn and a post-horse changing station. The permanent exhibition occupies three rooms; a fourth is used for temporary exhibitions. The initial collection came from the PTTK Regional Room.
The permanent exhibition presents the history of Warta and its surroundings, prominent figures associated with the town, and living rooms from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Particularly prominent are the souvenirs of the sculptor Stach z Warty Szukalski, of the aviator Stanisław Skarżyński, who flew across the Atlantic in 1933, and of the painter Zygmunt Andrychiewicz. A separate section presents archaeological finds from the area of the Jeziorsko reservoir, including a bronze vase more than two thousand years old. The museum also organises plein-air events, meetings, workshops and cultural events.
