About the museum
The Muzeum Okręgowe w Sieradzu (District Museum in Sieradz) was established in 1937 as a regional institution and over time became the main museum institution of the Sieradz Land. Its main seat is in the historic buildings at 2 ul. Dominikańska and 1 ul. Zamkowa in the centre of Sieradz; the administration and part of the storerooms are at the Rynek (Market Square). The museum includes branches: the Sieradzki Park Etnograficzny (Sieradz Ethnographic Park) in Sieradz and the Muzeum Walewskich in Tubądzin.
The collections cover archaeology, ethnography, history and the art of the region. The permanent exhibitions present, among other things, the results of many years of archaeological research carried out by the museum, showing the history of the Sieradz stronghold and castle, together with a hoard of coins from the area of the town and a numismatic collection from Mieszko I onwards. Separate exhibitions are devoted to the rural culture of the Sieradz region in the 19th and 20th centuries, to Sarmatian portraits of noble families with a reconstructed salon, to sacred art, to an old-town pharmacy, to palaeontological collections and to the work of Zygmunt Andrychiewicz.
The museum also runs a rich educational programme: museum lessons, workshops, cultural events and temporary exhibitions. The exhibitions on the ground floor and the first floor are accessible to wheelchair users, although the historic architecture imposes some limitations.
