About the museum

The Sieradzki Park Etnograficzny (Sieradz Ethnographic Park) is a branch of the Muzeum Okręgowe w Sieradzu. It lies in the eastern part of the town, on ul. Grodzka, between the river Żegliną and the Zalew Paradzianka, at the foot of Castle Hill. The idea of an open-air museum appeared in the 1960s, on the initiative of the museum’s director at the time, Zofia Neymanowa, who prepared the first concept in 1972. The park was established by a decision of the County People’s Council of 26 January 1973, and construction work began in 1975. After a break caused by the economic crisis, the idea was revived in 1986, and in 1987 the voivode issued a decision to build the park.

The first reconstructed building was a weaver’s house from Zgierz from the 1820s, and the second was the homestead of the folk sculptor Szczepan Mucha (1908–1982) from the village of Szale, with a collection of his sculptures from 1972–1983. The open-type homestead consists of a cottage from Sieradz-Męka from the second half of the 19th century, a barn from Ruda, an outbuilding from Wiertelaki and a wooden granary from Brąszewice Zabrodzie from around 1810. In the park there are also a shelter with old agricultural tools and machines, wayside shrines and a bread oven.

The park is open seasonally. It runs museum lessons, craft workshops and demonstrations of traditional techniques, as well as the programme “Krzesiwo” (“Flint and Steel”), which includes meetings with folk artists.
