About the museum
The museum is housed in a building from 1928, erected by the municipal surveyor in the style of the Polish manor house (dworek), popular in the interwar period. Previously a large weaver’s house stood on the site. The street on which it stands was called Belwederska, and today it commemorates the town’s founder, Stefan Złotnicki. After the war the building was nationalised, and until the 1970s it served as housing.
In the 1960s members of PTTK began collecting exhibits for the “Izba Tkacka” (Weaver’s Room), and in the 1970s the collections were enlarged by the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Zduńskiej Woli (Society of Friends of Zduńska Wola). The first exhibition took place on 30 May 1980. From 1986 to 1993 the institution operated as a branch of the Sieradz District Museum, and from 1 January 1994 it has been an independent municipal institution.
The collections include objects connected with the history and development of Zduńska Wola as an urban and industrial centre. The permanent exhibitions are devoted, among other things, to the founders of the town, weaving traditions, industrial and craft traditions, the social and cultural life of the multinational community, and a bourgeois parlour and a pharmacy room. The museum also runs museum lessons and clubs, and its branch is the Skansen Lokomotyw w Karsznicach (Steam Locomotive Open-Air Museum).
