About the museum
The Miejska Rada Narodowa (Municipal National Council) decided on the creation of the Muzeum Miasta Zgierza (Zgierz City Museum) in 1977. The institution opened to visitors in 1979, after a provisional renovation of the building. Its seat is the so-called Dom pod Lwami (House under the Lions), a brick single-storey weaver's house from 1828, whose attic is decorated with lions. The building was renovated inside and outside to bring its appearance closer to the original.
The collections number around five thousand objects documenting the past and present of the town and of the Zgierz district (powiat zgierski). They cover history, archaeology, ethnography, art and numismatics.
The exhibition “Dzieje Zgierza” (History of Zgierz) leads from prehistory, including finds from the Bronze Age, through the Middle Ages and the Swedish Deluge up to the interwar period, with a model of the town from the mid-19th century. The exhibition “Kruszówka” shows burgher interiors from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the flat of a textile manufacturer's family. In the Dom Tkacza (Weaver's House) a collection of old toys and dolls can be seen, and in the Park Kulturowy Miasta Tkaczy visitors can get to know the former weaving architecture.
