About the museum
The building at ul. Legionów Polskich was erected in 1839–1842 as the seat of the Bank Polski and the board of the western mining district. From 1889 it housed a mining school, from which the colloquial name “Sztygarka” (the Shift Overseer) comes. The town’s museum tradition goes back to the Muzeum Geologiczne (Geological Museum) opened in 1910, whose collections passed to the school after the First World War; after the Second World War a geological museum was set up there again, serving teaching purposes.
The present Muzeum Miejskie “Sztygarka” was established by resolution of the Dąbrowa Górnicza Town Council in 1997. The institution presents the history and heritage of the Zagłębie Dąbrowskie: the history of industry, ethnography, geology and travel. The permanent exhibitions show, among other things, medieval finds connected with silver and lead smelting, the interiors of a miner’s and a farmer’s cottage, a collection of souvenirs from distant continents, and the biography of the geologist Adam Piwowar.
Part of the museum is the Kopalnia Ćwiczebna (training mine), built from 1927 as a base for the practical training of mining school pupils and used until 1994. The three-level underground route has been open to visitors since 2010 and belongs to the Szlak Zabytków Techniki (Trail of Technical Monuments) of the Silesian Voivodeship. The museum also includes the Park Militarny Reduta and the Park Totalitaryzmów (Park of Totalitarianisms).
