About the museum
The Zagłębie Museum in Będzin was founded in 1956 on the initiative of local societies and a castle restoration committee; it opened on 22 July 1956 to mark the 600th anniversary of Będzin’s town rights. In 1945–1983 it was housed only in the castle and was the first museum institution in the Dąbrowa Basin. In 1983 a second seat was opened in the 18th-century palace and park complex of the Mieroszewski family in Gzichów.
The castle in Będzin is a medieval stronghold built in the mid-14th century by Casimir the Great on a hill above the Czarna Przemsza river; it was added to an older stone tower from the 13th century. Repeatedly destroyed, it was rebuilt in 1956 and has served the museum since then. Remnants of a stronghold whose history goes back to the 9th century also survive on the hill.
In addition to the castle and the palace, the museum includes the Będzin Underground, the former Jewish prayer house ‘Mizrachi’ at ul. Potockiego 3, the town walls and Castle Hill. The Mieroszewski Palace reopened in January 2026 after more than two months of interior renovation and conservation works; it can also be rented for private events.
