About the museum
The Muzeum Miejskie w Aleksandrowie Kujawskim (Municipal Museum in Aleksandrów Kujawski) was founded in 2007 as a municipal organisational unit. It is housed in rooms beside the chapel of St Alexander Nevsky at ul. Wojska Polskiego 4, which belongs to the local Orthodox parish. The municipal tourist information calls this place the Aleksandrowska Izba Historyczna (Aleksandrów Historical Room).
The chapel building was erected of red brick in 1893 as a residence for clergy serving a nearby Orthodox church, which was demolished in the interwar period. After the church was dismantled, the 19th-century iconostasis and icons were moved to the chapel.
The museum’s collections consist mainly of documents and photographs illustrating the history of the town. Its souvenirs tell the short but interesting story of Aleksandrów Kujawski, which developed in the 19th century around the railway station and received town rights in 1919.
