About the museum
The Muzeum Fortyfikacji Pancernej Twierdzy Toruń is run by the Toruńskie Towarzystwo Fortyfikacyjne (Toruń Fortification Society). It covers a section of the outer belt of the Prussian Toruń Fortress in the district of Podgórz, on ul. Poznańska. The most important objects are the experimental armoured battery AB IV, built in 1895, and the semi-armoured battery S.L.B. from 1899, together with an ammunition bunker.
The AB IV battery was an experimental defensive work and is regarded as a unique object on a European scale. Inside the Prussian structures, exhibitions have been set up on the history of the fortress, on Stalag XX A and on military history.
On the open ground between the Prussian works, objects from the interwar period, the Second World War and the Cold War have been gathered, Polish, German and Soviet. Visitors can see, among other things, an underground Polish SBF-180 bunker with its full equipment, Soviet observation and combat posts, and German guard bunkers. Tours are led by guides who are long-time enthusiasts of fortifications and of Toruń’s military past.
