About the museum

The Muzeum Mikołaja Reja in Nagłowice was founded in 1969, on the 400th anniversary of the death of the Renaissance poet and prose writer. It initially operated as a memorial room and took its present form after the manor house was renovated in 1988. The museum presents Rej’s links with Nagłowice, his life and his literary output.

The museum is housed in the classicist Walewski manor house, built in 1798–1800 to a modest design by Kacper Walewski and surrounded by an English-style park. In the manor house, next to the museum, there is a tourist information point and the municipal public library, and overnight accommodation is also available. The museum is run by the Samorządowe Centrum Bibliotek i Kultury “Dworek Mikołaja Reja” (Local Government Centre of Libraries and Culture “Mikołaj Rej Manor House”).

Works by Rej, including “List do sąsiada” (Letter to a Neighbour) and “Zeznanie podatkowe” (Tax Declaration), are displayed in showcases. Next to the manor house stands an interwar palace of the Radziwiłł family, and there are other historic buildings of the former estate: the outbuilding, the steward’s house, a labourers’ cottage, a stable, a granary and a forge.
