About the museum
The Przypkowski Museum came into being when the Przypkowski family handed over to the state a collection of sundials, astronomical instruments and a library of early printed books. The collection was created by Feliks Przypkowski (1872–1951), a physician who practised in Jędrzejów for almost fifty years and who from his youth was interested in astronomy and gnomonics, the science of constructing sundials. He began the collection in 1895 and added to it systematically, while also gathering literature on the subject. The Przypkowski family, whose coat of arms Radwan is today the museum’s emblem, traces its roots back to the Middle Ages and was among the leading representatives of the Polish Brethren.
The museum is housed in two historic 18th-century townhouses on the market square in Jędrzejów. The collections include hundreds of sundials and gnomonic instruments, as well as clepsydras, fire clocks, mechanical clocks and astronomical instruments. The early printed books section comprises around 600 volumes, the most valuable of which is a work by Copernicus from 1566, as well as copies bearing autographs of Hevelius, Descartes and Huygens; the collection of prints and bookplates comprises around 25,000 works from the 16th to the 20th century.
Visitors can see Feliks Przypkowski’s former residence with memorabilia and sundials he made with his own hands, the palace apartment with antique furniture and a set of Rococo kurdybany (embossed leather wall hangings), and the Garden of Time with sundials and zodiac signs among the ponds. In 2025, as part of the Government Programme for the Restoration of Monuments, the museum underwent renovation covering foundation insulation, roof replacement and modernisation of the astronomical observatory.
