About the museum
The Regional Museum in Pińczów was founded in 1963 and initially received one room in the Baroque Pauline monastery. The monastery was built in 1431–1449, and its present form, a quadrangular building with a cloister garden (wirydarz) in the middle, was probably achieved during the reconstruction of 1630–1642. After obtaining further rooms, the museum has carried out exhibition activities since 1970, and today it occupies part of the western, northern and eastern wings of the ground floor.
The collections come from the Ponidzie and document the traditions, history and culture of the region from the earliest times to the present. Three sections stand out: an archaeological one, with architectural details, pottery, objects of flint, bronze and iron, and coins; an artistic-historical one, with Judaica, early prints, manuscripts, maps, numismatics and militaria; and an ethnographic one, with objects of wood, metal and wicker, textiles and oleographs. In the 16th and 17th centuries Pińczów was a city of religious tolerance, an important centre of the Reformation and one of the largest Jewish communities in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, as the museum’s branches also tell.
The museum includes the Old Synagogue (Synagoga Stara), the Arian House (Dom Ariański), the Garden Bastion (Baszta Ogrodowa) and St Anne’s Chapel (kaplica św. Anny), which have their own tickets and opening hours. The museum also runs a Tourist Information Centre, publishes material on Pińczów and the Ponidzie, and offers themed walks around the town in the footsteps of the Italians, Jews and the Reformation.
