About the museum
The Greater Poland Fire Museum opened on 16 June 1974 thanks to cooperation between the city authorities, members of PTTK and volunteer and professional firefighters. Its seat is the former Evangelical meeting house (zbór) from 1763, which was later extended with the neighbouring building of a former school. Since 1995 the institution has been a branch of the Central Fire Museum in Mysłowice.
The collections number about four thousand exhibits documenting the history of the fire service in Greater Poland: horse-drawn hand pumps from 1776–1923, helmets and uniforms, motor pumps, medals, posters, books and 24 banners. On the ground floor and in the galleries stand historic cars and fire engines, including two Chevrolets from 1927, a Bedford from 1954, a Star 20 and Magirus vehicles. A separate part consists of gifts from the twin towns of Rakoniewice.
Since 2010 the interactive education room “Strażacy na ratunek przyrodzie” (Firefighters to the Rescue of Nature), now the Rescue Education Room, has operated, with multimedia displays on a flat fire, a car accident and a forest fire, and a fire-engine driving simulator.
