About the museum
The Muzeum Młynarstwa i Wsi (Museum of Milling and Village Life) is housed in the building of a former steam mill at ul. Fabryczna 12 in Ustrzyki Dolne. Before the First World War a factory of drilling tools stood here, and after it was destroyed during the war the firm “Lignum” of the Hauser brothers set up a steam mill in the building. The mill operated until 2007, and the original technical equipment has survived in the building.
The private museum opened in 2010 on the initiative of the mill's owners, Bożena and Janusz Bałkot. 1,100 m² on four floors have been made available to visitors. The permanent exhibition presents 19th-century machines, including a roller crusher from the 1830s, milling rolls, sieves, a dehuller and a trieur (grain separator). According to the museum, it is the only place in Poland where one can see a complete line for cleaning and grinding grain in a mill with a modern drive. Agricultural machines from the 19th and 20th centuries stand in the yard.
The building also houses an inn (karczma), and the museum organises workshops in regional baking for groups.
