About the museum

The Muzeum Przyrodniczo-Łowieckie “Knieja” (Natural History and Hunting Museum “Knieja”) in Nowosiółki is a private institution run since 2002 by Henryka and Jerzy Wałachowski. It grew out of their passion for hunting and nature and is still the life's work of its owners, who personally guide visitors and tell them about the region.

In three rooms the fauna and flora of the Bieszczady are presented, together with the history of hunting and forestry and their role in this area, as well as a gallery of historical photographs. The collections include game and protected birds, predators and forest animals such as bear, wolf, lynx, wisent and red deer, as well as a collection of butterflies and specimens from other countries. The museum also presents forest tools, everyday objects and a reconstructed village hut with old household equipment.

The nature trail “Na tropie mieszkańców karpackiej puszczy” (On the Trail of the Inhabitants of the Carpathian Forest), about 3.7 km long, starts at the museum, and in season the trout fish-frying stand “Leśne Smaki” (Forest Flavours) is open. The owners also organise photo safaris to less well-known corners of the Bieszczady.
