About the museum
The Muzeum Oręża Polskiego im. Jerzego Hoffmana (Jerzy Hoffman Museum of Polish Arms) opened in May 2013 as a private educational institution in Kiermusy, near Tykocin. It is housed in the Jantarowy Kasztel (Amber Castle), a building modelled on a 17th-century border fortress, which belongs to the tourist complex “Kiermusy Dworek nad Łąkami” (Kiermusy Manor House by the Meadows). The complex lies on the Narew, at the site of the former border between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Crown (the Kingdom of Poland).
The exhibition has three parts. The first concerns the Middle Ages and the novel “Krzyżacy” (The Teutonic Knights); the second is devoted to Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Trilogy; the third covers the castle courtyard with battlements, towers and cannons, and a dungeon with a torture chamber. The collection includes militaria, armour, historical costumes, archaeological finds and coins, as well as props from Jerzy Hoffman’s film adaptations, which the director gave to the museum.
What sets the museum apart from many similar institutions is that most exhibits can be touched, and the history is told by a curator known as the castellan. The interiors are filled with period music.
