About the museum
The Museum of the Łódź University of Technology (Muzeum Politechniki Łódzkiej) was established in 1985, in the jubilee year of the university’s 40th anniversary. The idea was put forward by Assoc. Prof. Marian Mieszkowski, a collaborator of the first rector, Prof. Bohdan Stefanowski. The institution was linked organisationally with the Main Library, and its professional oversight was entrusted to a Museum Council made up of members of the university’s Senior Club.
In 1992, before the 50th anniversary jubilee, the Museum Council was transformed into the Rector’s Historical Commission, and the rector set up the Historical Workshop of the Łódź University of Technology, which collected materials on the university’s history. In October 2019, in the 75th anniversary year of the university’s founding, the museum was established as a university-wide unit subordinate to the rector, and in January 2021 its regulations were agreed with the Minister of Culture.
The museum collects documents and archives, decorations and diplomas, insignia and academic gowns, old textbooks and handbooks, mementos of distinguished scholars, films and photographs, and old research apparatus and laboratory equipment. It shows its collections in a permanent exhibition and in temporary exhibitions devoted to the history of the university, its founders, staff and graduates. It also keeps the Book of Memory of Persons Distinguished for the Łódź University of Technology and a virtual museum.
