About the museum

The residence in Rogalin was built in 1770–1776 by Kazimierz Raczyński, one of the most important dignitaries of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The palace is laid out “between the courtyard and the garden”, typical of Baroque complexes, and its architecture combines features of Rococo and early Classicism. From the beginning it was an important centre of social and political life. After 1815 Edward Raczyński set up a neo-Gothic armoury with national mementos, created a landscape park with the oldest oaks, and built the family church-mausoleum.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries Edward Aleksander Raczyński and his wife Róża renovated the palace, and in 1910 they built a modern gallery building, in which he displayed one of the most valuable collections of contemporary painting in the Polish lands. After the Second World War the estate was taken over by the state. The museum in Rogalin has operated since 1948 as a branch of the National Museum in Poznań. In 1990 the last owner, Edward Bernard Raczyński, established the Fundacja im. Raczyńskich (Raczyński Foundation), which today owns the complex.

Visitors can see the palace’s interiors with furniture and decorations from various periods, the Gallery of Painting with works by Matejko, Malczewski and Boznańska, the carriage house with historic horse-drawn vehicles, and the London Cabinet of President Edward Bernard Raczyński, recreated in the north wing. Around them extend a Rococo garden and a park with the monumental oaks Lech, Czech and Rus. In 2018 the palace and park complex was recognised as a monument of history.
